There are many castles in Northern Spain, some have been totally or partially restored but others were sadly destroyed in past conflicts.
We cycled from Calcena to Mesones to see this impressive castle which dates back to 1370 and was never completed.
It was an easy ride mostly downhill with a warm head wind.
The local bars supplied much needed refreshments and a few tapas to fuel our return ride.
The local hand-made chorizo with crusty bread is always my favourite!

Calcena's Church
The church in Calcena reflects the village's rich past.
The church's architecture is the result of various styles (dating from XI - XVIII) Romanesque, Renaissance and Mudejar.
It is an impressive building with a series of chapels and altars.
Absolutely beautiful, it is really worth the visit even if you are not into churches!
Situated in the higher part of the village with amazing views of the surronding fields, mountains and river, from it's position.
Please let us know if you'd like to visit this church on one of our cycling tours and we'll be happy to ask Mariano, the village mayor, for the keys.
